Realizing the ambitious promises made by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals – including but not limited to Goal 5 on gender equality – will require a serious commitment to the collection and use of more and better gender data.
The first version of Ready to Measure – a joint product by Open Data Watch and Data2X – demonstrated that while many of the proposed gender-related indicators within the SDGs are challenging to collect, we can start somewhere.
The second R2M edition — Ready to Measure: Phase II — can be used to kick-start the measurement of a gender data baseline for the Global Goals. R2M Phase II consolidates SDG-related gender data in an online database (coming soon!) that allows searching by indicator, country, or SDG to reveal even more data insights, data gaps, trends in coverage or types of data sources.
R2M can also be used as a gender data spotlight — a tool to explore what gender data are ready, in what countries the data are ready, how to access the data if they are available, as well the compilation necessary to fill in missing data.
And because gender data are more than just numbers, R2M can be used as a gender data storyteller to share the reality of life for women and girls around the world.
It is the aim of R2M to contribute to ongoing gender data initiatives and show, both inside and outside the statistical community, that measurement of gender-related SDG targets is not only possible but can start now.
