Open Data Watch (ODW) started ten years ago as a small team with one clear goal: to push for open data and better statistics to drive sustainable development. Since then, ODW has grown into an agile team of diverse talents working on key areas of open data, gender data, and data for the SDGs.
From our early efforts to champion “open by default” policies at the UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) to expanding our flagship Open Data Inventory (ODIN)—now in its eighth round—our journey has been defined by adding value, staying adaptable, and continually evolving to achieve our goals. While open data has remained central to our mission, we have consistently focused on using data to drive equality and inclusion. Gender data for gender equality has been a priority, exemplified by initiatives like the Gender Data Compass. We continue to advocate for smarter data financing and emphasize the value of data in decision-making. Recently, we’ve leveraged our experience working with countries and global partners to strengthen inclusive data systems, paving the way for a more equitable future. Our timeline below shares these moments and more.

We owe our progress to our dedicated team with everyone adding value not only through their technical expertise but the drive and passion they bring by believing in our work that data can improve lives and change the world for the better.

We also feel privileged with our diverse country and international partners, and supportive funders who share our vision for better data for all. Together this group has helped make the impact of ODW possible over the years. Below we share quotes from many of our partners joining us in celebration of this past decade.
