‘Big Data’ and its potential to improve health and society is much discussed across the world. Linking disparate population-scaled datasets together is a key technique in the production of powerful new data resources that can illuminate, evaluate and steer policy and practice right across society. However, with this work comes the responsibility to build trustworthy and well-governed approaches that safeguard privacy at all times. Opportunities for new infrastructures and architectures present themselves, new analytical techniques are needed, and a cadre of people equipped with a new blend of skills is required.
