Strengthening the relationship between fact-checkers and national statistical offices can enhance the impact of each community’s work. But how can these two stakeholder groups strengthen their connections? To pursue this objective, Open Data Watch, Open Data Institute, PARIS21 are teaming up with three fact-checking organizations across the globe - Full Fact, Chequeado, and Africa Check - for a webinar that will forge a path toward curbing the spread of misinformation around the world.

The IAOS Conferences are special events, bringing together the vibrancy and diversity of the international statistical community, both statistics’ producers and users from different countries around the world. The motto of this year’s conference is "Worthy Information for Challenging Times”. Nowadays the importance of statistics is greater than ever before. The responses of societies and economies to the short and long term consequences of the COVID 19 pandemic are taking place within the challenges of climate change and the international commitments to leave no one behind. Data, and in particular Official Statistics, are key to these responses. Yet with multiple sources and providers, it is often difficult to differentiate the good from the bad, the trustworthy from the unreliable, the relevant from the noise.

The Barometer is a multi-dimensional and multi-layered study that assessed the state of data for public good in 109 countries. An expert survey was conducted from May 2019 – May 2021 to create a new global benchmark that looks at data governance, capability, availability, and use and impact of data for public good. You may explore and view the data, through its core (e.g. governance and capability) or thematic modules (e.g. climate action, land, public procurement) as well as on a country-level.

From improving disease response to enabling more equitable public transportation to promoting child well-being, responsible access to data has become essential. What policies are needed to facilitate and incentivize the opening of data for public interest purposes? What recent legal and policy developments are starting to shape the space of data collaboration? These and other questions focused on the state of open data policy will be addressed at the first “State of Open Data Policy Summit” hosted by the Open Data Policy Lab—a collaboration between The GovLab and Microsoft. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to and engage with senior leaders in government, civil society and business about the policies that can support more impactful re-use of data for the public good.

This event, the first event in the "Navigating the Landscape of Gender Data Financing" series, will continue the momentum of joint action for data investment highlighted at the World Bank and United Nation’s Ministerial Roundtable on 27 April as part of the World Bank/International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings and provide input for discussions on gender data financing at United Nations High-Level Political Forum.

The regional gathering will bring together forward-thinking policymakers, creative and innovative startups, global technology partners, civil society groups, and other regional and global stakeholders to discuss and learn about the structural barriers that may stymie the development of the ecosystem in Africa.

It has been nearly five years since the International Development Research Centre published The State of Open Data: Histories and Horizons. In their efforts to update their report and to foster a series of community dialogues on the current state of open data and how it fits into the broader data for development agenda, the D4D.net, in partnership with Local Development Research Centre (LDRI), brought together experts from government, the private sector, civil society, and the international development community to gather perspectives on recent developments and issues in the use and impact of open data around the world – from data governance, artificial intelligence, and data protection, to climate action, statistics, gender, and health.
Open Data Watch led the session “The State of Open Data: National Statistics” whose panelists included experts from the Local Development Research Institute, the United Nations Statistics Division, the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and The State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Statistics.

The VCE is an informal, interactive, and community-driven opportunity for you to engage with the wider IATI Community. It offers a space for shared learning, to spark discussions or showcase flagship projects. Moreover, this third VCE serves as a springboard to the scheduled in-person Community Exchange at the end of this year.

The theme for the HLPF 2022 will be “Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The HLPF in 2022 will review in-depth Sustainable Development Goals 4 on quality education, 5 on gender equality, 14 on life below water, 15 on life on land, and 17 on partnerships for the Goals. The forum will take into account the different and particular impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic across all Sustainable Development Goals and the integrated, indivisible and interlinked nature of the Goals.

In recent years, donors and governments have given more attention to promoting women's economic empowerment as a development priority, but the extent to which the rhetoric has translated into increased financing remains unclear. This event will launch a research from Publish What You Fund exploring donor and government financing to address gender gaps in unpaid care work and access to financial services, among other areas of women's economic empowerment, through its new report series, Women’s Economic Empowerment: Building Evidence for Better Investments. At this event, a panel of expert donor and civil society representatives will reflect on these findings and discuss what future WEE investments should look like.

This webinar is a discussion between Dan Bouk (Associate Professor of History, Colgate University, 2019-2010 Fellow Data & Society) and Dr. Alex Hanna (Director of Research at the Distributed AI Research) on how data is captured in the U.S. census and the stories behind the data. This conversation will be hosted by Ronteau Coppin (People and Culture Manager, Data & Society).
