This summer over 50,000 participants tuned in to the Generation Equality Forum(GEF) to discuss and announce bold commitments to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide. The forum culminated in the launch of a global 5-year action journey and $40 billion in new funding to accelerate gender equality by 2026.
This is just the beginning. It’s time to prioritize the collection and use of gender data. Many stakeholders highlighted the need for better and more comprehensive data to guide decisions, monitor progress, and alleviate the challenges women and girls face. However, gender data systems remain underfunded.
Our report with Data2X finds that an average of $500 million per year is needed from donors to fund core gender data systems, which is roughly twice the current level of support. It is imperative that stronger gender data systems are available to fully understand and track progress towards gender equality.
