SUMMARY:The Power of Open Data: Moving From Concept to Action
DESCRIPTION:This official United Nations Statistical Commission side event is co-hosted by Statistics Sweden\, Australian Bureau of Statistics\, and Open Data Watch. \nThe demand for open data has raised the profile of the national statistical office and brought with it a new set of challenges to explore and overcome. To respond to this growing interest and demand\, at its fiftieth session in 2019\, the U.N. Statistical Commission established a Working Group on Open Data to support the development of guidance for the assessment and practical application of open data in the context of official statistics. \nSince 2019\, the Working Group has been researching critical areas to ensure data collected and managed by national statistical offices can reach their full potential and benefit society as well as offer pathways forward to move from conceptualization of Open Data to implementation and action. These areas include the “Open Data by Default” principle\, Interoperability\, and Local-Level Data. \nThis session provides an opportunity to report on the work completed by the Working Group on Open Data to date\, focusing specifically on sharing best practices at the country-level of implementing open data by default and disseminating local-level open data while safeguarding confidentiality and privacy.

SUMMARY:Moving From Data Production to Impact: A Discussion on the Role of the NSO in Facilitating Greater Data Use
DESCRIPTION:This United Nations Statistical Commission side event\, co-hosted by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s Thematic Research Network on Data and Statistics (SDSN TReNDS) and Open Data Watch (ODW)\, will introduce and source audience feedback on a new ‘Avoiding Data Graveyards’ project that proposes a transformation process for effective data use to help producers of official statistics maximize data uptake and impact. \nThe process focuses on three key areas affecting data use: (1) capacity to govern data (organizational strategies\, laws\, and regulations); (2) capacity to meet user needs (responding to data demands); and (3) capacity to use data (data literacy). The session will also highlight data use challenges from NSO leadership\, showcase successful examples of how countries have improved the impact and uptake of their data during the pandemic\, and share lessons learned.
