DESCRIPTION:The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)\, in partnership with Data2x has initiated a project aimed at improving the production and use of gender data within National Statistics Systems through the creation of a strong and vibrant network. This Network proposes to pilot in selected African countries to begin to meet identified demand. In addition to providing some training in data production and analysis techniques\, the network will also focus on identifying and strengthening best practice in communication of data with a gender dimension and promotion of data use.  \nThis webinar will highlight the latest ICLS standards on work statistics and share key guidance in survey design and data analysis to shed light on gender issues\, as well as fieldwork experience and preliminary findings. It will contribute to sustaining the momentum behind better gender data collection in support of SDGs.

A five-year milestone will be reached towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 2020 is therefore a pivotal year for the accelerated realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls\, everywhere. \nThe sixty-fourth session of the Commission on the Status of Women is planned to take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 9 to 20 March 2020. Representatives of Member States\, UN entities\, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are invited to attend the session. \n  \n\n\n\n\nCSW64 Advisory\nIn light of the current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19)\, the UN Secretary-General has suggested to the Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) that Member States consider amending the format and conduct of the session. Options could include holding a scaled-down\, shortened session with the participation of New York-based delegations only\, or postponing the session to a later date. Member States will meet on Monday 2 March to discuss the matter and take a final decision. DESCRIPTION:PARIS21 and UN Women are collaborating on a project within the Making every woman and girl count initiative to strengthen national statistical systems to produce quality gender statistics aligned with national priorities and Agenda 2030. We have developed a framework for the assessment of gender statistics in terms of data gaps and capacity gaps of national statistical systems. The experience of three pilot countries will be shared alongside best practices on mainstreaming the gender perspective in national strategies for development of statistics (NSDS). SUMMARY:The Role of Governments in Building Modern Data Ecosystems for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:Since the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015\, member states have been actively engaged in trying to strengthen monitoring and information systems to track progress for people\, planet\, and prosperity. A particular opportunity has emerged\, in the form of the rising tide of new data sources. But this surge of data has at times proved difficult to wrangle and has surfaced concerns old and new–from data protection\, to the quality of official statistical systems\, to financing. So how have national data systems progressed since 2015\, particularly in their ability to support SDG monitoring? What systemic issues underpin these efforts\, and what critical course changes are required if we are to properly measure and progress on the SDGs?  \nThe event is a small\, 20-person roundtable\, intended to maximize active dialogue and exchange among all participants. Participants will include representatives from the Permanent Missions of Member States. The co-chairs of TReNDS’ expert group–representing notable data ecosystem actors such as Open Data Watch and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University–and representatives from the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD) will also participate.

DESCRIPTION:Convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council\, the High-level Political Forum is the central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2019\, the theme will be “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. A set of six goals will be reviewed in depth. The HLPF will also carry out regular voluntary reviews of the 2030 Agenda. These include developed and developing countries as well as relevant UN entities and other stakeholders. In 2019\, 51 countries (10 for the second time) have volunteered to present their national voluntary reviews to the HLPF.
