DESCRIPTION:This official United Nations Statistical Commission side event is co-hosted by Statistics Sweden\, Australian Bureau of Statistics\, and Open Data Watch. \nThe demand for open data has raised the profile of the national statistical office and brought with it a new set of challenges to explore and overcome. To respond to this growing interest and demand\, at its fiftieth session in 2019\, the U.N. Statistical Commission established a Working Group on Open Data to support the development of guidance for the assessment and practical application of open data in the context of official statistics. \nSince 2019\, the Working Group has been researching critical areas to ensure data collected and managed by national statistical offices can reach their full potential and benefit society as well as offer pathways forward to move from conceptualization of Open Data to implementation and action. These areas include the “Open Data by Default” principle\, Interoperability\, and Local-Level Data. \nThis session provides an opportunity to report on the work completed by the Working Group on Open Data to date\, focusing specifically on sharing best practices at the country-level of implementing open data by default and disseminating local-level open data while safeguarding confidentiality and privacy.

SUMMARY:Reflections from the 2021 UN World Data Forum: the evolving data ecosystem and the role of National Statistical Offices
DESCRIPTION:At the first UN World Data Forum in 2017\, the Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data (CTGAP) was launched with the aim to provide a framework for discussion on\, and planning and implementation of statistical capacity building necessary to achieve the scope and intent of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Activity around the third Forum held last month in Bern\, Switzerland continues to show the diversity\, dynamism\, and dedication of this community to finding solutions through data and statistics to drive sustainable development. Some of this spirit was encapsulated in the Bern Data Compact launched at the Forum\, together with the launch of the World Bank’s Global Data Facility and the Bern Network’s Clearinghouse for Financing Development Data. \n\nIn preparing for the fourth and fifth UN World Data Forums in Hangzhou\, China in 2023 and Medellin\, Colombia in 2024; the data community must take stock and reflect on the widening\, increasing and evolving needs of both data users and producers. This webinar is part of a conversation that contributes to the review and revision of the Cape Town Global Action plan to meet the needs of the countries in key areas such as coordination\, partnership\, capacity development and modernization of skills and infrastructure.

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n ▶ View a recording of the webinar here.\n  \nOpen Data Watch has just released the 5th Annual Open Data Inventory (ODIN) Report. This report presents a snapshot of the global progress on open data and analysis of the  ODIN 2020/21 findings that were released in early December 2020. This report is released along the sidelines of the 52nd session of the United Nations Statistical Commission- an opportunity to further develop and increase the value of the workstream on open data started at the 49th session in 2018 (Agenda item 3(c)). ODIN is the only global measure of the openness of national statistics\, covering 187 countries in the latest edition. The index is currently used by many countries as a benchmark of their progress to open up statistical data in their country.  \nThe event will be 90-minutes long. A welcome by the hosts\, including remarks on the state of open data in official statistics\, will be followed by a panel of five speakers from NSOs who each will share their experiences in implementing successful strategies to improve open data\, as well as the challenges they faced and future projects. SUMMARY:The High-level Political Forum 2020
DESCRIPTION:The meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development in 2020 convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council\, will be held from Tuesday\, 7 July\, to Thursday\, 16 July 2020\, including the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from Tuesday\, 14 July\, to Thursday\, 16 July 2020. The theme will be “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development “. \nIn accordance with paragraph 84 of the 2030 Agenda\, Member States have decided that the HLPF shall carry out regular voluntary reviews (VNR) of the 2030 Agenda which will include developed and developing countries as well as relevant UN entities and other stakeholders. The reviews are state-led\, involving ministerial and other relevant high-level participants\, and provide a platform for partnerships\, including through the participation of major groups and other relevant stakeholders. \nIn 2020\, 50 countries will present their national voluntary reviews to the HLPF. The VNR presentations are planned to begin on Monday\, 13 July 2020 and proceed for the three days of the ministerial segment of HLPF.

SUMMARY:The Impact of COVID-19 on National Statistical Offices: Accelerating Innovation
DESCRIPTION:As with all activities\, data collection by National Statistical Offices (NSO) was disrupted by the quarantine measures undertaken in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact was particularly felt in those activities that rely on face-to-face interviews\, such as household surveys and censuses. \nThe abruptness of the quarantine measures meant that changes in data collection efforts had to be done quickly and that new approaches and data sources had to be tried. This seminar will present the experience of NSOs in the use of new data collection methods and data sources to continue with their regular flows of statistics and to satisfy new demands for information.

SUMMARY:Gender Data Series: Mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on women and girls
