​Ramesh was the first Malaysian to hold the position of Chief Statistician of Malaysia. His long career is marked by achievements ranging from helping to design the first edition of the World Development Indicators tables in 1978, to playing major roles in the development of the 1993 System of National Accounts and the development of the methodology underlying the World Bank’s Living Standards Measurement Surveys. His extensive experience working with international agencies includes, while Senior Statistical Adviser and Special Adviser to the Vice President of the World Bank, having led efforts to aid the transition of Eastern European countries and the former Soviet Union to transform their statistical systems to serve market economies. Since 1996, when he founded the Cresset Research Group, Datuk Chander has pioneered a framework for preparing Statistical Master Plans and has served as a policy advisor to Pakistan, China, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, and Mongolia in addition to various development aid agencies.
